Anyone who has lived in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota is familiar with Davanni’s. Some of us even remember Pontillo’s, the early predecessor of Davanni’s. Pontillo’s opened their first restaurant back in 1975, at the corner of Cleveland and Grand in St. Paul. The word of Pontillo’s authentic New York style pizza quickly spread and more locations were added. As a teenager growing up in Apple Valley, I spent lots of time at the Bloomington Pontillo’s. It was located on Lyndale Avenue, just north of 98th Street.
The original Pontillo’s opened in Buffalo, New York, back in 1947. As Pontillo’s expanded in the Twin Cities, they needed a name that could be trademarked. Davanti’s means “leader” in Italian. A slight modification produced “Davanni’s”, and the name change became effective on August 15, 1983. Though I have since moved away from Minnesota, a trip home to see family and friends always means a visit to Davanni’s.
