Vermont Sales Tax Holiday Free Weekend

March 12, 2024

If you live in Vermont, I have some bad news: as of this writing, Vermont will not be having a sales tax holiday or tax free weekend in 2024. All back to school purchases during July and August will be subject to the normal combined state + county + city sales tax rate. In most areas, the total sales tax is either 6% and 7%.

If you happen to be traveling this summer, these 18 states WILL be holding sales tax holidays: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon have no state sales tax.

In Minnesota and Pennsylvania, clothing and footwear are exempt.

Keep your fingers crossed and maybe (hopefully!) your legislators will enact a Vermont sales tax holiday for 2024.

Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday Free Weekend

March 12, 2024

This tax holiday applied in previous years but has NOT yet been approved by the Massachusetts Legislature for 2024. As soon as I receive further information, this page will be updated. Be sure to check back often!

Don’t miss the Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday when doing your back-to-school shopping. The tax free weekend takes place over 2 days:

Saturday, August 13
Sunday, August 14

On those dates, you can purchase most items priced at $2,500 or less without paying Massachusetts state sales tax. These items are NOT included: restaurant meals, motor vehicles, motorboats, and tobacco. Any item priced over $2,500 will be subject to the full 6.25% tax rate.

Many stores will be having special back to school sales on eligible items in conjunction with the sales tax holiday. Walmart, Target, Shoe Carnival, Famous Footwear, Kmart, Sears, JCPenney, Neiman Marcus, Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Marshalls, Kohl’s, Old Navy, Best Buy, Office Depot, Office Max, and Staples have frequent tax free weekend sales and back to school tax holiday promotions.

Be sure to take advantage of the Massachusetts Sales Tax Holiday and back-to-school tax free weekend: August 13-14, 2022.
